I wrote "Mighty Counselor" in college in the early 1990s, around the same time as "Lord We Lift" — the two came out of the same stretch of me experimenting with chord progressions and modulations, and both owe a real debt to the high-energy harmonies of Petra and Halo. At the time it existed only as a song idea; I could only imagine hearing it someday with the full-band sound I had in my head. I remember demoing it for my college roommate using just my bass guitar and voice, and when I got to the guitar-lead introduction — which I tried to mimic vocally — he told me it sounded like a "ski video." Decades later, AI-assisted music production finally helped bring the sound I'd originally imagined to life.
The title "Mighty Counselor" combines two of the names given to Christ in Isaiah 9:6, a phrase that came to me while writing the song. The lyrics center on Jesus as both the victorious King and a faithful, forever Friend. Beginning with a dream-like vision of a world in crisis, the song portrays Christ standing above the chaos, overcoming every opposing force and inspiring worship, trust, and hope. —Dan Parks
At its heart, Mighty Counselor is a testimony of gratitude and amazement at God's love. The chorus proclaims Jesus as the "awesome Prince of Peace" who died and rose again to set captives free. The verses also reflect the reality of the Christian journey—moments of uncertainty, spiritual growth, and the longing to know God more deeply despite human limitations.
A recurring theme throughout the song is friendship with Christ. Inspired by Jesus' words in John 15:13-14, the lyrics celebrate the Savior who laid down His life for His friends and continues to walk faithfully beside them. Ultimately, Mighty Counselor is a song of worship, encouragement, and anticipation, looking forward to the day believers will hear the words, "Well done," from the One who loves them beyond measure.
