In the fall of 1992, I returned to college after a difficult semester away and met a new friend through a mutual connection. Both of us loved music, and we started rehearsing songs together as a duo, performing for friends.
This was one of those songs. I had decided to sit down and write a song, and used my Bible as the lyrical source. I opened to the book of Revelation — to chapter 1 — and was struck by verses 5–8. The words and chords formed into a song quickly, as I recall.
